For our question this week for our Q&A with Dr. J is, “Do you just treat conditions of the spine?” Contrary to our clinic name, we do not just treat back and neck pain. My common response to people when they ask the question, “What conditions do you treat?” “If you move it, we treat it.” That goes for neck pain, back pain, knee pain, shoulder pain, golfer’s elbow, tennis elbow, meniscus injuries, sprained ankle, TMJ, the list goes on. Any condition, any orthopedic condition, we’re qualified to evaluate and treat those.

In fact, with our specific training in how we evaluate conditions, we’re actually very, very smart first line of care for an extremity condition because we’re going to be able to evaluate it and get to the root cause of what the issue is. I think commonly with… We use the shoulder, for example, because it’s so common to injure the shoulder, but let’s say we injure the shoulder in the gym or throwing a ball in the backyard, we assume it’s a strain or a tear. The soft tissues in the shoulder can take a couple of months to kind of get back to where they need to be. We commonly see that, we give them a thorough evaluation.

And the issue is not coming from the soft tissues at all, it’s coming from the shoulder joint that gets better in a matter of days to weeks rather than months, or maybe coming from the neck itself. That happens at a surprising rate, actually. That’s a video for another time. But we’re able to use our evaluation skills to actually get to what the root cause of the problem is, and then get you back to the activities that you want to be able to do quicker. We don’t always manipulate or adjust the extremities as often as we might with spinal conditions.

We’ve got a myriad of other treatment options that we utilize more commonly, things like Kinesio taping, dry needling, active release therapies, and then, of course, very customized rehabilitation and exercise approach. So, the answer to the question is a resounding yes, we absolutely treat conditions outside of the spine. If you’ve been dealing with some shoulder or knee pain that has been nagging for a while, you’ve got a new injury, please come see us. We’ll get to the bottom of it.
