Which mattress is the best one to help with lower back pain?
This is a good question considering many of us spend at least a third of our lives laying in bed. Besides, who doesn’t like to have a good night’s sleep?
Obviously, the mattress you sleep on will impact the amount of back pain you suffer. Sleeping on the wrong mattress can make your pain worse which can affect your physical performance the next day.
Aside from sleepless nights, the last thing you want to add to an incurable grogginess is pinching lower back pain.
Studies suggested that firmer mattresses were best suited to those experiencing lower back pain; however, a more recent study suggests that this is no longer the case. Many now believe that firmer mattresses actually contribute to lower back pain and poor sleep.
Softer mattresses aren’t exactly the answer either. While softer mattresses conform to the natural shape of your body, allowing for more comfort, it can cause your body to sink in and contort the muscles in the lower back.
The best mattress to help alleviate lower back pain would be something that falls in the middle of both firm and soft, allowing you to have structured support and complete comfort. For many of us this isn’t that simple.
You can certainly test out mattresses in-store, but what feels good for five to ten minutes might not necessarily feel as great for five to eight hours (or longer if you’re lucky).
Try experimenting with different beds as much as you can at either a friend’s or family member’s house. Pay attention to how you sleep at hotels and listen to how your lower back reacts.
